Woman charged with human trafficking

Sobeyda Garcia Reyes pleaded not guilty to all charges

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A 37-year-old Dominican woman was hauled before a magistrate’s court yesterday to face human trafficking charges.

Sobeyda Garcia Reyes, also known as Sobeyda Scrivens, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson Pratt, was charged with conspiracy to engage in trafficking in persons, trafficking in persons, and unlawfully withholding the passport of a Venezuelan woman, whom she is alleged to have trafficked.

The woman’s identity remained sealed by the court in accordance with the Trafficking in Persons Act.

Prosecutors alleged that between December 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019, Reyes harbored the victim for the purpose of exploitation.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Pratt denied the accused bail.

Reyes has been remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

She will return to court on August 21 for a status hearing.
