NASSAU, BAHAMAS: A conch diving trip ended in tragedy Thursday morning when a man became unresponsive after surfacing from waters off New Providence and later died despite efforts to save him.
Police said shortly after 11:00 a.m. they were alerted that an unresponsive man had been brought ashore aboard an 18-foot vessel at Montague Dock. Officers and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations revealed that the deceased and another man departed Potter’s Cay Dock around 7:00 a.m. to dive for conch approximately five miles off the coast of New Providence near Porgy Rock. Around 10:30 a.m., after surfacing from the water, the deceased reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and became unresponsive.
The other diver attempted to assist him back aboard the vessel but was unsuccessful. He then sought help from nearby boaters, who assisted in retrieving the man from the water and transporting him to Montague Dock.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Police investigations continue.
