TRAGEDY AT SEA: 17 people dead after suspected smuggling vessel overturns near Blackbeard Cay

Two Bahamians in custody; search for survivors ongoing

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- In the worst migrant boating tragedy in three years, at least 17 people, mostly women, died after a two-engine vessel capsized off Blackbeard’s Cay early Sunday morning.

Officials said twenty-five people were also rescued from the vessel.

Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis said at a press conference that authorities believe between 50 to 60 people were on the vessel, with search and rescue efforts continuing.

He said the 30ft vessel left West Bay Street and was heading to Miami, Florida.

Aubynette Rolle, managing director of the Public Hospitals Authority, said the youngest victim is believed to be a girl between the ages of 1 and 5.

Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander said two Bahamian men known to police are in custody assisting police with their investigations. The men were rescued from the vessel.
