Stopover arrivals ‘holding firm’ despite early challenges as total visitor arrivals reach 9.1M

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Tourism Director General Latia Duncombe says that despite some challenges earlier in the year, the country’s important stopover arrival segment is “holding firm,” with 1.56 million visitors between January and October.

Duncombe, speaking at the Bahamas Out Island Promotion Board’s annual general meeting at Baha Mar on Thursday, noted that the Bahamas has welcomed 9.1 million visitors so far this year.

“From January to October, we have welcomed 9.1 million visitors to the islands of The Bahamas,” Duncombe said.

She also highlighted that 2019 had been a banner year for the country, which, despite the impact of Hurricane Dorian—primarily on Abaco and Grand Bahama—still welcomed 7.2 million visitors, a record at the time. That record was surpassed in 2023, with 9.65 million visitors.

“We had some challenges earlier in the year, saw some highs and some lows, but we can see that stopover arrivals for 2024 have reached 1.56 million—the same as last year, with a difference of only 0.1 percent. Despite everything, the numbers are holding firm. The numbers tell the story.”

Duncombe lauded tourism stakeholders, emphasizing that it was the collective effort of all involved that had helped the industry overcome challenges this year.

“It’s our collective effort that achieved this result. Despite the challenges we faced earlier in the year, stopover arrivals are holding firm.”

Duncombe also noted that the Bahamas.com website has seen a tremendous increase in traffic, which has benefited hotel property bookings and leads.
