Voters’ Register Riddled With Errors

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Several red flags are emerging from the voters’ register just two days before advance polls and ahead of the May 12 general election.

A review by Eyewitness News has identified multiple anomalies, including future birthdates, underage entries and possible duplicate registrations.

Among the most concerning findings are at least 18 voters listed with birth years in the future, including 2029, 2036, 2046 and even 2065.

The review also flagged dozens of individuals who would not meet the legal voting age of 18 by Election Day, with some entries suggesting persons were infants or not yet born.

Possible duplicate records were also identified, with matching names and dates of birth appearing under different voter numbers.

In some cases, voters were listed as being more than 110 years old, including one entry dating back to 1891.

The findings come amid confusion at the Parliamentary Registration Department, where some Free National Movement candidates said they were unable to obtain copies of the certified register following a fire alarm interruption.

FNM legal adviser Michael Scott, KC, described the situation as “mired in confusion,” warning that the country may not be in a position to have a proper election if the issues are not resolved.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson said Monday marked the official publication day of the register and confirmed that representatives from the FNM, PLP and Coalition of Independents had been collecting copies since morning.

It remains unclear whether the discrepancies are the result of clerical errors, outdated records or a deeper issue within the voter database.

Attempts to reach the Parliamentary Commissioner for further clarification were unsuccessful up to news time.

Eyewitness News has asked the Parliamentary Registration Department how these entries made it into a certified register and what safeguards are in place to prevent ineligible votes.
