Verizon Media Group CEO reaffirms editorial independence, cites “facts, accuracy and balance” as core values

By Gershon Major, CEO of the Verizon Media Group and Paramount Systems Ltd

As it relates to the question of Media & Politics in The Bahamas given recent pronouncements, let me say that our journalists at Eyewitness News are seasoned industry professionals who joined our organization precisely because of the journalistic ethos and autonomy they’re able to exercise within our organization. Facts, accuracy and balance in any story we produce, will always remain the foundational tenants we stand on.

Since I assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer five (5) years ago, as it relates to our Chairman of Verizon Media Group – H.E Sebastian Bastian, he has not had nor does he have any direct operational oversight or involvement in the day-to-day operations of the company. As a matter of fact, this preceded his recent political aspirations.

We are less concerned about bias, because we’re living in a very different era from a decade and a half ago—one where mainstream news is no longer the sole source of information.

The truth today cannot be suppressed. Information moves fluidly, well beyond traditional news formats. Every story now exists within an ecosystem of instant feedback, public scrutiny, and independent verification. Within minutes of a report being published, anyone can challenge, fact-check, or confirm it across personal and professional WhatsApp groups and social platforms. In that sense, news and information have both been democratized.

So what might have been a legitimate concern years ago simply isn’t the same issue today. The real concern for us in this new landscape isn’t bias—it’s misinformation: fake memes, fabricated content, AI-generated videos, and manipulated voice notes. That’s where the real threat to transparency lies.

In short, it’s best to ensure that we don’t give any merit to focusing on the wrong area of concern. The checks and balances built into today’s digital information environment ensure that fairness and accountability are stronger than ever.
