Man dies after being struck by vehicle as police gun battle ends with suspect arrested following high-speed chase

NASSAU, BAHAMAS: A 59-year-old man is dead and one suspect is in hospital under police guard after a vehicle struck the victim before leading officers on a chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire with off-duty police on Sunday morning.
Police are investigating a homicide and a police-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, 12th July, 2026, in the area of Spikenard and Carmichael Roads.
According to preliminary reports, shortly before 8:00 a.m., two off-duty police officers were travelling east along Carmichael Road in a private vehicle when they observed a silver Suzuki collide with a man who was lying on the ground.
Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and examined the victim, a 59-year-old man who was dressed in a dark-coloured T-shirt and blue denim shorts. He had sustained what appeared to be severe lacerations and other injuries to his upper body. He was transported to hospital for further medical treatment, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Following the incident, the two off-duty officers pursued the suspect vehicle through Excellence Estates and onto Golden Isles Road. During the pursuit, one of the vehicle’s occupants discharged multiple rounds in the direction of the officers.
The pursuit continued onto Cowpen Road and into the Summerset community, where the suspect vehicle came to a stop.
The suspects exited the vehicle, produced firearms, and fired multiple shots at the officers. Fearing for their lives, the officers returned fire from their service weapons. The suspects subsequently re-entered the vehicle, drove to a nearby dead end, abandoned the vehicle, and fled on foot eastward into a bushy area.
With the assistance of responding officers, the area was searched, resulting in one suspect being located with an apparent gunshot wound to the lower back. He was arrested, cautioned, and transported by ambulance to hospital for medical treatment, where he remains in stable condition.
Crime scene investigators processed the scenes, recovering a firearm, the suspect vehicle—a silver Suzuki—and other items of evidential value. The off-duty officers’ vehicle also sustained gunfire damage to the right front passenger door.
Police investigations into the homicide and the police-involved shooting are ongoing.
