LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: Union chief voices frustration over BPL energy reform plans

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Kyle Wilson, President of The Bahamas Electrical Workers Union, expressed frustration in a Wednesday morning press briefing, stating that 600 Bahamas Power and Light workers are “ready for action” due to the Davis Administration’s alleged failure to meet with the BEWU regarding government’s Energy Reform plans for BPL.

Wilson mentioned attempts to discuss concerns with Energy Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis, claiming the union was denied the opportunity.

He emphasized that workers feel uninformed about impending changes to the power company, which were initially disclosed months ago when the union learned of government plans to address BPL’s issues.

Prime Minister Philip Davis outlined the government’s 5-point energy plan in June, which includes involving independent power producers to enhance electricity services across New Providence and the family islands.

Despite government assurances against layoffs during a June 10th briefing, Wilson maintained concerns about job security for workers.
