Editor,
Let’s get some facts out of the way first. There is no changing the reality that Jones is not a heterosexual and that hundreds of thousands of people don’t live in male-female relationships.
The idea that Jones should not have introduced her fianceé as such in the presence of school children (as she allegedly did) isn’t just backward, it flies in the face of what education should be.
At its core, education is about preparing a student to live in the world beyond the classroom. That world includes many people who may not look like them: straight, gay, and many in between. Therefore, it is ridiculous to suggest that children should not be “exposed” to the realities of life simply because YOU disagree with the choices others have made.
I’d rather a child be exposed to a healthy “non-traditional” relationship through Jonquel Jones’ example than through the internet or TV, where sensationalist depictions run rampant.
To put it colloquially, Bahamians need to stop acting like they een use. Jones doesn’t need your approval or your unsolicited opinions.
Decent people respect someone else’s right to make their own choices for their own life. Rude people choose to make those choices the focus of their commentary.
So, what kind of person are you?
