Four charged in drug seizure

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Three Bahamian women and a man were hauled before the magistrate’s court yesterday and charged in connection with the seizure of over 12 pounds of marijuana.

Alex Sawyer, 33, and Eleanor Major, 24, of Skyline Drive, along with Saberina Walker, 31, and Roeline Benjamin, 30, of Glinton Square, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain on charges of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply.

Prosecutors alleged that the women were found in Sawyer’s Skyline Drive home on December 3 with three ounces of Indian hemp marijuana.

Another 12 pounds, eight ounces of marijuana was found following a search of the home, prosecutors alleged.

Sawyer was also charged with one count of bribery.

It was alleged that he offered Assistant Superintendent Pierre $1,000 to dismiss the matter.

The accused each pled not guilty to the charges against them and were denied bail.

Swain remanded them to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services

They will have to apply for bail in the Supreme Court.

They return to court on March 14 for the start of their trial.
