NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) is moving forward with a $6.5 million rehabilitation of a key section of Runway 14/32 at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), with Bahamian-owned contractor Bahamas Hot Mix (BHM) carrying out the work.
The project, which begins today, will cover approximately 400,000 square feet of the runway and is expected to conclude by October 31, 2026. It follows the rehabilitation of approximately 484,000 square feet of asphalt pavement in 2025.
The work will be conducted in three stages and include asphalt milling, the removal and replacement of approximately four inches of existing asphalt pavement and the reinstatement of runway markings.
NAD said the scheduled work forms part of its ongoing mandate to maintain critical airside infrastructure and ensure that LPIA continues to meet local and international safety standards.
Jonathan Hanna, Vice President of Operations at NAD, said the scheduled work further reinforces the safety and reliability of LPIA’s airfield infrastructure.
“This work on Runway 14/32 represents a critical investment in maintaining the safety, efficiency and long-term reliability of LPIA’s airside infrastructure,” Hanna said. “Runway pavement is subject to significant wear over time. Scheduled rehabilitation allows us to proactively address specific areas while maintaining the high operational standards required at our airport. The work builds on the significant improvements completed last year and we are coordinating closely with our airport and airline partners throughout each stage of this project.”
The timing of the airside work at the end of the busy summer travel period will allow most of the construction to take place during the off-peak months of September and October, just ahead of the year-end increase in traffic at LPIA.
Based on the current schedule, Runway 14/32 is expected to be completely closed for the first three to four weeks of the rehabilitation exercise. During this period, aircraft operations will transition to Runway 10/28.
Runway 14/32 is then anticipated to reopen for limited use during subsequent stages of the project until the work is completed. Airside work is expected to take place six days per week, with teams using a combination of daytime and nighttime shifts to remain on schedule.
A runway capacity study was conducted earlier this summer to assess the potential impact of the work on aircraft arrivals and departures. Based on that study, LPIA is expected to have sufficient runway capacity to accommodate anticipated traffic throughout the project.
The $6.5 million rehabilitation will be carried out by Bahamas Hot Mix, the Bahamian-owned company that completed the previous pavement rehabilitation on Runway 14/32 in 2025. The current scope builds on those improvements and represents the majority of the ongoing pavement rehabilitation programme for the runway.
“Maintaining airport operations during the project requires significant planning and coordination. For portions of the work, LPIA’s airside operations will be reduced from two runways to one. We have successfully managed single-runway operations in the past and will continue to work closely with our airport partners to reduce disruptions.”
Hanna added, “At a busy airport like LPIA, there is never a perfect time to schedule this type of work. We operate during an active hurricane season six months out of the year and we have several robust peak travel periods annually. With that in mind, we are working to complete the rehabilitation as efficiently as possible during this off-peak season and hopefully with minimal weather delays.”
NAD will continue coordinating with airline partners and key airport stakeholders, including the Bahamas Air Navigation Services Authority, the Airport Authority and others, throughout the project.
Residents and businesses in the western and eastern ends of New Providence may notice increased aircraft traffic during certain stages of construction.
Motorists travelling near Windsor Field are also being asked to exercise caution because heavy equipment will be operating in the area throughout the project.
