NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Rupert Roberts, the owner of the SuperValue Food Store chain, praised the United States for exempting the Caribbean from new tariffs imposed on China.
In an interview with Eyewitness News on Tuesday, Roberts explained that if The Bahamas had been subjected to these new taxes, the food store chain would have had to pass down a price increase of 25 percent to consumers.
Tropical Shipping, the company through which Roberts imports products for his stores, released a statement about the exemption during the holiday weekend.
Tim Martin, President and CEO of Tropical Shipping, attributed the exemption to months of coordinated efforts by Caribbean governments, business groups, and advocacy organizations. They warned U.S. trade officials about the severe economic consequences the tariffs could cause.
