One suspect arrested in connection with one incident
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Authorities were yesterday investigating three armed robberies that occurred in New Providence over the weekend, amid increased concerns in some quarters about an uptick in robberies at gunpoint.
All three incidents took place on Saturday.
An armed assailant approached a man walking on Faith Avenue South and robbed him of cash and other items around 6 a.m.
Authorities said the gunman got into a white Honda and fled.
Police released a partial license plate number of the getaway vehicle: 3297.
Police also reported that shortly after 10 a.m., a woman, who was at her home on Sommer Set Way, off Mermaid Boulevard, was approached by an armed man who robbed her of cash before escaping in a silver Nissan Sylphy with the registration plate: AP5644.
In the third incident, authorities said two gunmen beat up and robbed a man, who walking on Solider Road, of cash and a cell phone around 4 p.m.
A 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident a short while later, according to reports.
Police made their usual appeal for anyone with information on these incidents to contact them.
Authorities also advised the public of safety precautions to undertake.
“Think about your safety before you leave home; make sure someone knows where you are going, who you are with and what time you are likely to return,” police said.
“Fully charge your mobile phone and keep it with you, so you can keep in contact with your friends and family and ring police should you need to.
“Walking home in the dark is never a good idea, but if you absolutely must try to walk with a friend; keep [to] busy, well-lit roads even if it means taking a longer route.”
Police also said that in the event of being followed, go to the nearest available place where there are people and request help, and if help is not nearby, call the police.
“If you can’t find somewhere or you are worried about someone’s behavior towards you in any way, call 919,” police continued.
“Don’t be afraid about being wrong or overreacting.
“The police would rather be called only to find that all is well than be dealing with an incident because someone was afraid of calling them.
“Always try to be aware of what and who is around you, and avoid putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
“And remember, it might not be you that is in danger; if you see anything you think is suspicious call the police — better safe than sorry.”
