NASSAU, BAHAMAS — More than 40 Haitian nationals appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt in the Magistrate’s Court on Long Island on charges of illegal landing.
The interdictions followed two operations involving immigration and defense force officers in Clarence Town, Long Island, and Mars Bay, Andros.
According to the Department of Immigration, another group of 45 Haitian men and seven women found on Mars Bay, Andros, are expected to appear in court today.
On Long Island, the department said 22 men and one woman were processed, arraigned and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for illegal landing, and one woman was sentenced to one year and six months to run concurrently for deceit of a public officer and illegal landing.
The remaining 21 migrants pleaded guilty to illegal landing. They were all granted a conditional discharge and ordered deported at the earliest opportunity.
The department advised that direct repatriation from Long Island through Exuma was being arranged via Bahamasair.
