NASSAU, BAHAMAS — One of the largest employers on the island of Exuma will undergo a multi-million dollar transformation exercise for the next six-to-eight months, according to a press release from the Ministry of Tourism.
When completed, Sandals Emerald Bay will become Beaches Exuma which the release says will create over 850 jobs. The development currently employs just over 400 Bahamians, with approximately 200 from Exuma. The Ministry said that efforts will be made to redeploy as many workers as possible to other Sandals properties.
During the closure, dozens of employees will remain on-site to manage and secure the facility, and efforts are underway to redeploy as many workers as possible to other Sandals properties. One-on-one consultations began this afternoon and will continue over the next two days to discuss options, including skeleton crews and transfers to Sandals properties in Turks and Caicos.
“We will do all we can in providing support to help the affected workers to transition,” said Chester Cooper, Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation and Member of Parliament for Exuma.
“A Jobs and Entrepreneurship fair will be held on August 9 for residents of Exuma, featuring representatives of all existing hotels and new developers. Residents are also invited to register with the TeamCooper Job Bank at www.TeamCooperExuma.com.”
Current Sandals Emerald Bay employees will reportedly receive priority consideration for positions at Beaches Exuma.
Residents needing assistance with National Insurance Board (NIB) benefits are asked to apply at the job fair or visit Cooper’s Office in Exuma.
