NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Revisions to The Bahamas’ building code are nearly complete according to Works Minister Clay Sweeting who noted that full implementation is anticipated by the third quarter of 2025.
During a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday, Sweeting noted: “The Bahamas Building Code revision, the fourth edition, is nearly complete, with the final technical issues resolved as of October 1st, 2024. The draft is expected by the end of December. Public consultation is anticipated in the first quarter of 2025.”
Full implementation, including legislative adjustments and institutional strengthening, is anticipated by the end of the third quarter of 2025.
Sweeting also noted that the Building Regulation Act amendments are in the works.
“A proposed amendment will introduce independent inspectors, registered architects, and engineers to assist with inspections. This will allow for more flexibility in inspection times, including after-hours and weekends, benefiting developers and ensuring construction is completed more quickly.”
Sweeting also revealed that the Contractors Act is being amended, with both revisions to the building code and that legislation working simultaneously.
“The building codes are further along than the other. I don’t have a timeline on that yet. I know the Contractors Association has been leveraging efforts to ensure progress, so we are looking into that and hopefully will be able to set a timeline shortly,” said Sweeting.
The Bahamian Contractors Association (BCA) has urged the government to appoint the Contractors Board, emphasizing the need for Bahamian contractors to be properly licensed to protect the billion-dollar construction sector. The BCA has repeatedly stated that the full implementation of the Construction Contractors Act would enable the appointment of the Contractors Board and allow Bahamian contractors to be properly licensed.
The Construction Contractors Bill was passed in 2016; however, the Contractors Board, which is essential for overseeing the licensing and certification of contractors according to their capabilities and specific scope of work, has yet to be appointed.
