NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) has called off the search for five missing boaters who went missing during a boating incident last weekend.
The missing boaters were passengers aboard a 27-ft vessel that capsized on September 12th in waters south of Chub Cay.
According to the RBDF, twelve migrants were rescued, and search efforts were conducted to find another five people who had been reported missing.
Commander William Sturrup, the RBDF’s Search and Rescue Coordinator, said search operations were suspended after some four days of canvassing an expansive area of waters around Chub Cay, and the Berry Islands.
He said the decision was also based on wind and tide models.
Sturrup said: “There were no signs of life or wreckage found during the helo (sic) overflights or vessel patrols in that area. The Defence Force is grateful to interagency partners and the United States Coast Guard for their support in this activity and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains poised to keeping Bahamian waters safe”.
Sturrup expressed his thanks to the various agencies involved in the search.
