NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Two men, ages 19 and 23, are under police guard in hospital after being arrested for questioning in connection with a firearm investigation following a high-speed police chase on Grand Bahama that ended in a crash and an officer discharging a service weapon.
According to preliminary reports, shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, 16th May 2026, officers attached to the Mobile Division were conducting routine patrols along East Beach Drive when they observed a Chevrolet Malibu being driven with only one functioning headlight.
Police said officers attempted to stop the vehicle using lights, sirens and an air horn, but the driver allegedly refused and led officers on a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase, the vehicle was reportedly driven recklessly, creating a danger for other road users. The pursuit ended on Independence Avenue in the Heritage Subdivision when the vehicle crashed into a tree.
Police reported that as officers approached the crashed vehicle, the driver exited holding what appeared to be a firearm, causing officers to fear for their safety. In response, one officer discharged a single round from his service weapon in the direction of the driver.
Officers subsequently subdued and arrested two occupants of the vehicle, while a third male reportedly fled the scene and remains at large. A thorough search of the area was conducted; however, no firearm was recovered.
Investigators said a black ski mask was found in the jacket of the 23-year-old suspect. The 19-year-old suspect was also wanted on an outstanding criminal warrant.
Both men sustained injuries during the collision and were transported to hospital by Emergency Medical Services, where they remain under police guard while receiving treatment.
Police continue investigations and are appealing to anyone with information to contact 911, 919, the nearest police station, the Criminal Investigation Department, or CRIME STOPPERS at 328-TIPS (8477).
