PM Welcomes Bastian’s possible Political Interest, Says No Plans to Amend Gaming Act

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Prime Minister Philip Davis says he welcomes the reported political interest expressed by prominent businessman and ambassador Sebas Bastian, but made it clear there are no plans to amend the Gaming Act to allow individuals with gaming interests to serve as Cabinet ministers.

Speaking to reporters Friday , Davis said: “He has demonstrated that he has been a successful young businessman. He has expressed an interest in running, and once he applies, his application will be considered in the same context as we consider any other aspirant. I welcome his willingness to come forward to help build this country. His innovative mind that he has demonstrated in his businesses shows that he has something to offer. So I welcome his interest in becoming part of frontline politics.”

When asked whether the government would consider changing the law to accommodate individuals with gaming ties, Davis responded:

“I don’t think we will amend the law to allow Cabinet ministers to have an interest in gaming licenses. That’s not on the table for us.”

Under the current law, individuals with direct or indirect financial interests in gaming operations are barred from serving as Members of Parliament or Cabinet Ministers. The restriction is designed to prevent conflicts of interest and includes those with spousal or family ties to gaming businesses.

During a recent appearance on Beyond the Headlines, Bastian did not confirm any plans to run for office but stated that “nothing is off the table” when asked about a future in politics. His comments have since renewed public discussion about the Gaming Act and political eligibility.

Leslia Miller-Brice, Chair of the Independence Secretariat and wife of a gaming executive, has also expressed support for potential amendments to the legislation, which currently disqualifies her from holding ministerial office. She however maintains that she is prepared to continue to work in any position to serve the Bahamian people.

The Progressive Liberal Party is expected to begin its candidate selection process soon ahead of the next general election.
