PM to meet with unions today

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis is expected to meet with leaders of several unions today.

Trade Union Congress (TUC) president Obie Ferguson confirmed to Eyewitness News Online the meeting is slated for 4 pm.

Ferguson confirmed that at least three unions under the TUC, namely the Bahamas Nurses Union, the Bahamas Doctors Union and the Water & Sewerage Manager’s Union will be in attendance.

“The prime minister called the meeting with several unions. I suspect the objective is to resolve some of the issues that are outstanding but we shall see,” Ferguson said.

Paul Maynard, the Bahamas Electrical Workers Union’s (BEWU) president also confirmed that a meeting with several public sector unions is scheduled for today.

Around this same time last year, Dr Minnis held a large-scale meeting with union leaders; however, the exercise was branded as largely unproductive by the unions.

Meanwhile, scores of NIB workers walked off the job for the fourth day amid failed negotiations on a new industrial agreement between the Union of Public Officers and the board.

UPO president Ghion Roach claims the board is reneging on a clause that was previously agreed upon, and has pledged workers will continue to strike until the matter is resolved.
