NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said his administration was not focused on a snap election at this time.
During a press conference today, the prime minister was asked whether he was considering an early election for the country as Jamaica (September 3) has called snap elections this year.
Trinidad and Tobago held its election on August 10, 2020.
The last general election in The Bahamas was held May 10, 2017 with the constitutional deadline for a five-year term ending into 2022.
Minnis said: “At this point in time our priority is saving Bahamian lives, and that’s what we are concentrating on at this particular (time) – that is more important to us. Saving lives after which we want to deal with our economy to ensure that people are working and improve their quality of life.”
Back in March, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Chester Cooper urged the prime minister to call an early election if he is confident of the electorate’s support and a Free National Movement (FNM) clean sweep at the polls.
At the time, Cooper said Minnis was “gambling with the future of our nation”.
The prime minister was speaking at the Heads of Agreement signing at the Cabinet Office with Eleuthera Properties Ltd. for the development of the Jack’s Bay resort, golf course and marina project.
