NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis called Shaunae Miller-Uibo over the weekend to personally congratulate her on setting a new world record in the women’s 300m.
Prime Minister Minnis also extended congratulations to Mrs. Miller-Uibo and her husband, Maicel Uibo, on behalf of the Government of The Bahamas and the Bahamian people.
Mrs. Miller-Uibo set a new world record in the women’s 300m at the 58th Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic, on Thursday 20 June. She finished in 34.41s, more than a second faster than the previous 35.45s record.
Prime Minister Minnis acknowledged Mrs. Miller-Uibo’s stellar career as a sprinter and noted that this latest milestone was yet another example of her distinction in the sport of track and field.
Mrs. Miller-Uibo was the 400m Olympic champion in 2016 and the 200m gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The Prime Minister said he looked forward to congratulating Mrs. Miller-Uibo in person on her next visit home to The Bahamas.
Congratulations also came in on Sunday from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.
“The Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture proudly congratulates Shaunae Miller-Uibo on her recent world record setting performance of 34.41s in the 300m at the 58th edition of the Golden Spike track meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic,” outlined a statement issued yesterday from the ministry.
“Running out of lane 4, Shaunae easily eclipsed her field of competitors, smashing the previous world-best of 35.30 set by Ana Guevara at altitude in Mexico City in 2003.
“We also congratulate Stephen Gardiner on his first race since returning from injury earlier this year, winning his 400-meter race at the same competition in a season’s best time of 44.95s.
“The Ministry takes this opportunity to congratulate both athletes and we wish these, and all of our outstanding athletes, a continued healthy and successful season,” the ministry’s statement concluded.
