NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The Bahamas is one step closer to legalizing medicinal and religious use of cannabis as debate began in The House of Assembly on the compendium of Cannabis bills that seeks to establish a regulated medical cannabis framework for the country.
Minister of Health Dr. Michael Darville who kicked-off the debate said the legislation speaks to some ailments that could possibly be remedied or treated with medicinal marijuana. Minister Darville said that the bill is not about recreational marijuana but rather primarily aims to decriminalize cannabis for medical and therapeutic use to bring relief to Bahamian patients.
The Cannabis Bill 2023 establishes The Bahamas Cannabis Authority which will oversee all aspects of cannabis regulation. The compendium also includes the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill; Health Professions (Amendment) Bill; Hospitals and Health Care Facilities (General) (Amendment) Regulations; and the Pharmacy (Amendment) Bill.
