New Electronic Communications Sector (ECS) policy published

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has announced the publication of the Government of The Bahamas’ new Electronic Communications Sector (ECS) Policy, which outlines strategic objectives to guide the nation’s electronic communications development.

Published in the Official Gazette on October 21, 2024, the ECS Policy reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a modern, inclusive, and robust information and communications technology (ICT) ecosystem. The policy is pivotal to achieving equitable and sustainable economic and social growth throughout The Bahamas.

The ECS Policy provides a comprehensive framework to inform URCA’s regulatory responsibilities under the Communications Act, 2009. It aligns with the government’s broader vision for sustainable national development, aiming to ensure all Bahamians benefit from innovative and accessible ICT solutions.

As the independent regulator, URCA will play a key role in implementing the policy’s objectives, which include deploying emerging technologies such as 5G and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) to enhance connectivity across all islands, particularly in underserved and rural areas. The policy emphasizes universal access to high-quality, affordable ICT services, with a focus on equitable access for vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Additionally, the ECS Policy seeks to align ICT goals with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing areas such as gender equality, climate action, and inclusive education. It also tackles critical challenges, including bridging the digital divide, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable competition within the sector.

URCA stated that it remains committed to effective implementation, collaborating with stakeholders to achieve a forward-looking, equitable, and competitive ICT environment that propels The Bahamas toward a connected future.
