NASSAU, BAHAMAS- Shaunae Miller-Uibo was presented the Order of Lignum Vitae at Government House yesterday for excellence in public service.
Governor General, The Hon. Cornelius A. Smith presented the Olympic gold medalist and multiple national record holder with the prestigious medal.
At just 25 years of age, Miller-Uibo has represented The Bahamas as a professional in track and field for six years now and has won at the highest levels of competition.
“It’s such a huge honor, I just want to say thank you to everyone who was involved, his excellency as well. It was a great honor and I’m just so happy that I can be awarded this recognition,”she said about the award.
Miller-Uibo ended the 2019 track and field season on a high note earlier this month, capturing a silver medal in her specialty race at the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Prior to that, she had won every race she competed in since 2017.
“This year was one of the best years I’ve ever had in my career, I think the best so far,” she said about this past season.
“Being able to PR and get a national record in the 200m and 400m. I think I was ranked 11th overall in the 200m and sixth overall in the 400m and so it’s a big blessing. We’re still very young and pushing very hard to carry the Bahamas as high as we could.”
In regards to the upcoming season, which is an Olympic year, Miller-Uibo said she wants to run both the 200 and 400 in Tokyo, Japan, however, it will come down to the scheduling at the event.
“We’re still putting in requests to change it for the double and if it all takes place we’re really looking forward to putting in that hard work and bringing home two golds.”
