Man shot, killed in attempted armed robbery

A man believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s was shot and killed near a bar on Bacardi and Carmichael Roads shortly after 9:00 p.m Wednesday.

Police said the victim had just pulled up to the business establishment when he was approached by a lone gunman who attempted to rob him. The gunman reportedly shot the man and escaped. According to eyewitnesses, the victim ran a short distance away and collapsed.

Medical emergency personnel were called to the scene and the man was pronounced dead.

Eyewitness News was first on the scene last night as family members of the deceased, cried out for justice, noting that their loved one was innocent.

Chief Superintendent of Police Solomon Cash, who heads the Central Detective Unit, confirmed that there has been an increase in armed robberies in the capital and police are concerned about the spike.

“We are always concerned with any category of crime … members of the public should be vigilant about their surroundings … and to alert the police of suspicious nature,” Cash said.

He added that police presence remains on the street but concentrated efforts change depending on the criminal activity.

“When you look at the demographics, when you have instances in one area, our manpower shits to an area that is high in crime,” Cash said.

This latest homicide marks the 40th for the year.
