Murder count reaches 75; 13 murders in 12 days

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — A man was shot and killed yesterday while sitting in his car on Bimini Avenue off Market Street, police reported.

Shortly before 11 p.m., a gunman walked up to the victim, who was sitting in his vehicle, and shot him before running away.

The victim was transported to hospital, according to authorities.

Residents of the area, who did not wish to be named, referred to the victim as Michael.

He is believed to be in his 20s.

“Current was off last night [and] as soon as current came on, we went inside the house and heard gunshots,” said one resident, who imitated the repeated sound of gunshots heard.

“Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. [It] sounded like it like seven to eight shots went off.

“I came outside running — me and my son — and when we came outside, the road was full of neighbors through the corner trying to assist whoever [got] shot. We noticed the dog was barking at the bush where everybody was walking through the shortcut.”

Several residents said it was not uncommon to for shootings to take place in the area, and suspects typically flee into nearby bushes.

This latest killing brings the murder count to 75, according to Eyewitness News’ records.

The incident also marks the 13th killing in 12 days.
