Letters to the Editor: Tribute to Philip Galanis

Editor,

During the past few weeks we’ve had an opportunity to focus on the depth and breadth of former Senator Philip Galanis’ immense contributions to The Bahamas, and the world, in a vast array of national and international arenas –  professionally, politically, and socially.

I’d like to add to these tributes by highlighting Phil’s spirituality. He was raised in a devoutly Roman Catholic family. The values imbued in him at home were further nurtured and developed at Saint Augustine’s College, where he attended High School, at a time when the Roman Catholic priests and monks were known for their dedication to developing intellectually competent young men, steeped in Christian values. Undoubtedly “service above self” is one of the values that Phil exhibited during his life.

As the University of The Bahamas (UB) moves towards national and international accreditation, I shine a spotlight on Phil’s Herculean effort to ensure that UB audits are up to date. He was passionately committed to UB being accepted and affirmed by the national and international accrediting bodies. He didn’t see UB only as a client of the HLB accounting firm. UB was also the recipient of his experience as a long-standing member of the Board of Trustees of St. John’s University, his alma mater. Phil saw education as key to national development and he tirelessly pressed UB’s role in national development.

As we remember Philip Galanis, like others, I salute his tremendous accomplishments. I also invite us all to note that Phil ran his life’s race grounded in spirituality. This led to his remarkable record of national and international service above self – one worthy of emulation.
