Dear Editor,
I do not often write on such issues, but I feel compelled to pen my thoughts as I witness the unfolding crisis among our neighbors to the north. While I am not a supporter of U.S. President Donald J. Trump, I understand his rationale for protecting America’s borders. Every sovereign nation has the right—and responsibility—to safeguard its land, culture, and citizens from the dangers of unchecked migration.
The Bible warns us about the consequences of allowing strangers to overrun a nation. Exodus 23:9 teaches us to be fair to foreigners. Still, it also speaks in Deuteronomy 28:43-44 about the dangers of outsiders becoming stronger than the native people: “The foreigner who resides among you will rise higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them; they will be the head, but you will be the tail.” This is not a call for cruelty, but a reminder that failing to regulate migration can lead to a nation’s downfall.
Illegal immigration is not just about people seeking a better life—it brings crime, economic strain, and cultural erosion. We have seen how lawless migration has led to chaos, increased violence, and national instability in countries that refused to enforce their borders. Can The Bahamas afford to make the same mistake?
This is not to say that migration is entirely bad. Legal migration has undeniable benefits, contributing to economic growth, cultural diversity, and workforce expansion. Likewise, helping genuine asylum seekers fleeing war and persecution aligns with our Christian values. However, there should be laws and processes to ensure that only those who contribute positively to society can stay.
The time has come for our leaders to take a firm stance. We must prioritize the mass deportation of all illegal migrants and revoke the practice of foreigners obtaining Bahamian names under pretense. It is deeply troubling that we allow non-Bahamians to infiltrate our national identity, eroding the very essence of who we are as a people. I appeal to our lawmakers to cease this practice immediately!
The late Dr. Myles Munroe once warned: “If we allow illegal immigrants to invade our country, we will become tenants in our own land.” His words ring true now more than ever. If we fail to act decisively, we will wake up one day to find that The Bahamas no longer belongs to Bahamians. This is not intended to create fear; rather, it reflects our current reality that we need to address proactively.
This is a sensitive issue, but it cannot be ignored. Our government—current and future—must address illegal immigration with urgency, protecting our land for generations to come.
“A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.” — Ronald Reagan, Former President of the United States.
