Letters to the Editor: A government with mixed priorities

Editor,

The Davis-Cooper Administration has shown unmistakable signs of mixed priorities. In the recent 2024/2025 budget debate, it was disclosed that $2.5 million was earmarked for purchasing a seized aircraft to facilitate travel for government officials across the family islands. This decision has sparked considerable concern, particularly in light of the critical issues facing our family islands.

Eleuthera, a significant contributor to our country’s revenue, has been grappling with severe water and electricity shortages, leaving residents without basic necessities for extended periods. Meanwhile, Long Island struggles with inadequate infrastructure and essential services, such as a functional ATM and proper road maintenance. Mayaguana, despite its resourcefulness, faces ongoing challenges due to insufficient government support. Cat Island, renowned for its rich history and significant representation in parliament, has been threatened with canceled flight services due to an unsafe runway.

These examples underscore a stark reality: many family islands are in urgent need of medical supplies, healthcare services, fire protection, and essential infrastructure upgrades. Yet, the government has prioritized purchasing an aircraft. This misalignment between allocation of resources and pressing community needs calls into question the administration’s commitment to addressing the fundamental challenges affecting Bahamian citizens.

The job of our parliamentarians is clear: they are supposed to govern in the best interests of all people. This Davis-Cooper Administration needs to adjust its priorities and deploy resources where they are most needed, especially for family island residents often left out in the cold.
