Higgs out for the season

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The University of Texas women’s team was dealt a tough blow yesterday as it learned that senior guard Lashann Higgs would be out for the remainder of the season.

On Friday, Higgs suffered a knee injury that turned out to be a torn ACL. Higgs injured herself on a drive to the rim in the first half of a win over Quinnipiac.

“It’s likely that Higgs will petition the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) after the season to have a medical redshirt year,” said Texas spokesman Sean Cartell.

Higgs was named to the All-Big 12 preseason team and was the team’s leading scorer prior to the injury.

Less than two weeks ago, Higgs became the 44th Longhorn to join the 1,000-point club. She averaged 13. 8 points and 4.5 rebounds in four games this season, her second as a starter. She was expected to be a major part of the team’s offense this season, seeing that Texas lost senior guards Ariel Atkins and Brooke McCarty to graduation.
