NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The Ministry of Health has agreed on seven modular health clinics for Grand Bahama and the Abacos in the wake of deadly Hurricane Dorian.
Bullock’s Harbour on Berry Island will also get a unit, according to situation report, the underscored the facilities would need to be
functional for at least two years.
The daily update, dated October 4, stated proposed locations for the clinics are: High Rock and Free Town in Grand Bahama; and four in the Abacos, Treasure Cay, Hope Town, Guana Cay, and Green Turtle Cay.
International teams presented assessments of the damage to the health facilities infrastructure throughout Grand Bahama and Abaco on for infrastructural needs at an October 2 meeting, the report read. In the Abacos, seven of nine clinics are operational: Treasure Cay, Coopers Town, Fox Town, Green Turtle, Marsh Harbour, Moore’s Island, and
Sandy Point.
Hope Town and Man-O-War Cay clinics were destroyed. On Grand Bahama, clinics in High Rock and Pelican Point were destroyed and four other clinics were non-operational: Grand Cay, McClean’s Town, Free Town Clinic and Sweeting’s Cay. Clinics in Eight Mile Rock and Hawksbill were the only facilities operation, according to the daily update.
Discussions centered on restoring primary care services to the affected areas in the short, medium and long term.
“It is anticipated that these units be functional for at least two years while permanent structures are repaired or rebuilt in some cases,” the report read. “Architectural specifications for building Clinics based on size of population served and level of health services to be provided will be shared with partners to help them in determining the best Modular Units.
Additionally, assistance with procuring supplies and equipment for the units is being considered, equipment list for DPH (Department of Public Health) was shared.
“Assistance with exploring Modular units for housing DPH staff on the islands was also requested since home and facilities to rent were destroyed and not available,” it added.
