NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Haiti’s Consul to The Bahamas and First Secretary in the Haitian Embassy Karl-Henry Chatelier has been fired with immediate effect after a purported video of the consular exposing himself went viral.
In a letter obtained by Eyewitness News, Haiti’s Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe and Minister of Foreign Affairs Claude Joseph wrote:
“I inform you that it has been decided to terminate your duties as first secretary, head of consular service at the embassy of Haiti in The Bahamas.
“The decision is effective immediately. While thanking you for your services, I serve you, I renew to you, sir, the assurance of distinguished consideration.”
The letter dated September 28 has been translated from Creole to English.
In the video, a naked man facing the camera brings his genitals into focus and masturbates.
Chatelier is the latest Haitian diplomat to be removed from the embassy in The Bahamas.
In August 2019, at least three diplomats at the embassy were recalled following a Haitian commission of inquiry into concerns of corruption.
According to The Haiti Sentinel, which translated in English an original article by Le Nouvelliste on the recall, then Haitian Foreign Affairs Minister Bocchit Edmond told the Le Nouvelliste that the commission’s report revealed “unacceptable situations” at the embassy.
Edmond reportedly told the Le Nouvelliste that several diplomats were involved in wrongdoing either directly or indirectly, namely regarding a residence visa scheme in The Bahamas.
Five people were accused of orchestrating a fraudulent marriage scheme in order for Haitian immigrants to gain Bahamian status.
Yesterday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Darren Henfield said he was not aware of the matter.
