NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The government plans to accelerate the establishment of the Bahamian Contractors Board, which will oversee the licensing and certification of contractors in the Bahamian construction sector, according to Acting Press Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Keishla Smith.
Referring to the Bahamian Contractors Association, Smith said: “They have been airing their concerns about the status of their industry. The Prime Minister plans to meet with them soon. There is legislation in place to regulate the construction industry; however, we are still waiting for the board to be put together, which will deal with the day-to-day regulation of the industry, and that is something the government will put more urgent energy behind so that we can get that going and try and eliminate some of the grievances within the construction sector.”
Bahamian Contractors Association President Leonard Sands recently told Eyewitness News, “The president of the Bahamian Contractors Association (BCA) is once again urging the government to appoint the Contractors Board, emphasizing the need for Bahamian contractors to be properly licensed to protect the billion-dollar construction sector.”
Sands urged the government to fully implement the Construction Contractors Act, which would enable the appointment of the Contractors Board and allow Bahamian contractors to be properly licensed. The Construction Contractors Bill was passed in 2016; however, the Contractors Board, which is essential for overseeing the licensing and certification of contractors according to their capabilities and specific scope of work, has yet to be appointed.
