Govt in talks with FedEx to bring in more revenue
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Following years of issues plaguing the General Post Office on East Hill Street, the operations and employees have finally moved to their new location at the Town Centre Mall.
Minister of Transport and Local Government, Renward Wells, said that persons can now officially visit their post boxes at the new location to pick up mail, as employees have returned to their 9-5 shift since the beginning of this week.
The new location is fully air conditioned and is equipped with a cafeteria for employees – a luxury they did not have at the former location.
Wells told the media after yesterday’s official opening ceremony, that the government is also in talks with FedEx to create a partnership that will generate more revenue for the General Post Office.
“ We are also looking to expand the online mail ordering part of the postal service. We are looking at how we can get a dedicated section of the Post Office to deal with those purchases from Amazon and those global companies that will be coming into The Bahamas.”
Delivering the keynote address at yesterday’s opening, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said his administration made the best choice for the relocation of the country’s mail hub.
“Despite the political games and the misleading rhetoric by some, this new location is far and above superior to the locations proposed by the former administration,” the prime minister said. “Indeed, the other locations would have proven more expensive and taken considerably more time to open.”
Dr. Minnis also mentioned a need for more hires to conduct mail sorting and handle other services at the Post Office.
Meanwhile, Wells told reporters that his ministry is working on these efforts and the public should hear more about his ministry’s movement in July.
“After the budget debate and during the budget debate, you will hear some things from me regarding the Post Office and all of the requisite departments that are a part of the Ministry of Transport,” he said.
Bahamas Public Services Union President, Kimsley Ferguson, said he was happy that employees could now work in conditions that are “conducive to productivity.”
