Four teams advance to soccer nationals semifinals

The 2018 Samuel P. Haven/ Island Luck Cares Foundation National Soccer Championships officially got underway yesterday.

Two games in each division headlined the action at the Roscoe Davies Field.

In the tournament opener, the Aquinas College senior girls knocked off C.V. Bethel 1-0. Sierra Sweeting scored the only goal of the match for the Aces in the 25th minute of the first half.

In the second game of the day, Anatol Rodgers scored an upset victory over the defending champion C.R. Walker in the senior boys division. The Timberwolves went up 2-0 in the first half and held on to win the game 2-1.

The third game came down to penalty kicks, as neither C.R. Walker or Bishop Michael Eldon’s senior girls were able to score in regulation. The Knights held on to win the game 4-2 to move on to the semifinal round.

And in the marquee match of the evening, the Lyford Cay Dragons’ senior boys easily got past Sir Jack Hayward, cruising to a 3-0 wire-to-wire victory. Charles Allen connected on two goals for the Dragons.

Now that the quarterfinals are out of the way, the following teams are moving on to today’s semifinal round:

Boys:

Tabernacle Baptist

St. Andrews School

Lyford Cay School

Anatol Rodgers High School

Girls:

CR Walker

Queen’s College

Aquinas College

Lucayan International School

Teams that won their respective league titles (BAISS, GSSSA, GBSSSA) earned first round byes at this year’s tournament.

Ahead of today’s games, there will be a draw to determine the semifinal matchups.

Action kicks off at 5:00 p.m. today at the Roscoe Davies Field. Entrance fees are: $1 for students in uniform and $3 for everyone else.
