Foundational grid works on track for May completion as government backs Bahamian-led transition

NASAu, BAHAMAS- The Government says that foundational grid works are on track for completion by the end of May, while expressing confidence in the newly appointed Bahamian leadership at Bahamas Grid Company and confirming that contractor Pike remains engaged to complete its assigned scope.

The works form part of a broader grid modernization programme, including the 132kV Switching Station at Clifton Pier, reconductoring of the Clifton Pier to Big Pond 132kV circuit, a new 132kV transmission line between Blue Hills and Big Pond substations, upgrades at Big Pond Substation, protection upgrades at Blue Hills and Skyline substations, and installation of Intellirupters.

Officials say the foundational grid works are already delivering results, with outages nearly cut in half and measurable improvements in reliability and system resilience across New Providence.

The Government in a statement on Wednesday said it welcomed the appointment of Dareo McKenzie as Chief Executive Officer of Bahamas Grid Company and Mrs. Gladys Fernander, CPA, as Chief Financial Officer, marking a transition to full Bahamian operational leadership.

McKenzie is said to bring more than 30 years of experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors, including senior roles at GE Vernova and Consolidated Edison of New York, where he led major grid modernization and capital programmes.

Mrs. Fernander, a Certified Public Accountant, previously served as Chief Financial Officer of Commonwealth Bank, overseeing financial strategy, capital planning, treasury, and regulatory compliance across more than two decades of executive leadership.

The Government said the appointments reflect strong Bahamian capacity in the energy sector and should strengthen public confidence in the ongoing transformation.

According to the government’s statement, Pike which was originally intended to be involved in a 25-year agreement remains on site in The Bahamas, engaged to complete its scope of grid works.

Officials stressed that ownership of transmission and distribution assets remains unchanged, and that the current phase reflects a managed transition following completion of foundational works.

“The only change at this stage is the move to a fully Bahamian-led operating team after the completion of the foundational phase,” the statement noted. “That is a transition the Government welcomes.”

The Government said it has full confidence in the new Bahamian leadership at Bahamas Grid Company and remains focused on ensuring a stronger, more reliable electricity system for the country.
