Exuma Chamber President backs crown land allocation for Affordable housing, calls it key to economic growth

NASSAU, BAHAMAS- The president of the Exuma Chamber of Commerce is welcoming the government’s allocation of Crown land for affordable housing development, describing it as a “clear commitment” to addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing the island.

In a statement, Chamber President Ehren Hanna said the move reflects “a clear commitment to addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing our community—access to attainable, quality housing for residents and future generations.” He noted that the views expressed are solely his own as president and “do not necessarily reflect the views of the board and/or its members.”

“Since being appointed, I have actively advocated for strategic solutions to housing constraints, recognizing that sustainable economic growth is deeply tied to the ability of individuals and families to live and thrive within the communities they serve,” Hanna said. “I am encouraged to see tangible progress toward making affordable housing a reality.”

Hanna underscored that the impact of the initiative extends beyond homeownership, noting that “increasing access to affordable housing will help stabilize the local workforce, reduce the cost-of-living burden on families, and create opportunities for young professionals and skilled workers to remain in or relocate to Exuma.” He added that this “strengthens the social fabric of our islands and supports long-term population sustainability.”

From a business perspective, he said “the availability of affordable housing is a critical enabler of economic development,” pointing out that “employers across key sectors—including tourism, construction, retail, and maritime services—have consistently identified housing shortages as a barrier to recruitment and retention.” Addressing the issue, he said, will “unlock new potential for business expansion, entrepreneurship, and investment.”

He also noted that “the development of housing on Crown land presents an opportunity to stimulate economic activity through construction, infrastructure development, and related services,” adding that “local contractors, suppliers, and small businesses stand to benefit directly,” while “increased population stability enhances consumer confidence and spending across the island.”

Hanna stressed the need for careful execution, saying “it is also critical to emphasize the importance of sustainable and well-planned development.” He urged “a collaborative approach that incorporates resilient building practices, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure planning that aligns with Exuma’s unique ecological and cultural landscape,” adding that “thoughtful execution will ensure that growth today does not compromise the needs of future generations.”

“I look forward to continued engagement with the Government and other stakeholders to support the successful implementation of this initiative,” he said, adding that he remains “committed to advocating for policies and partnerships that foster inclusive growth, economic resilience, and an improved quality of life for all who call Exuma home.”
