Men were en route to Haiti in 57-foot vessel
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Eight Haitian nationals en route to Haiti from New Providence in a 57-foot vessel had to be rescued by the Royal Bahama Defence Force yesterday morning after their vessel ran aground.
The men were in a wooden cargo freighter called ‘Shamu Too’ and en route to Haiti when the vessel experienced mechanical failure and ran aground Hogsty Reef, an uninhabited coral atoll located between Great Inagua and Acklins.
The defence force said none of the men were injured during the ordeal.
An Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) helicopter airlifted food supplies to the men.
The HMBS Durward Knowles assisted with the rescue operation.
The men were brought back to New Providence.
