Defense force officer in custody for unlicensed firearm

FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA — A Royal Bahamas Defence Force Officer is in police custody after he was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to police, officers received some information about a suspicious male dressed in blue jeans with a dark-colored top with a hood while working the Island Wide Special Operation on Saturday.

“The male was believed to be in possession of a firearm and was seen walking in the area of a nightclub on the Mall Road, near the International Bazaar,” the statement read.

“Officers quickly responded and saw a male fitting the description. The male was stopped and searched and a black and silver Smith and Wesson 9mm firearm with ten rounds of ammunition was found in his waist. The suspect was later identified as a Defence Force officer. He was arrested and taken into police custody.”

Investigations into this matter are ongoing, police said.
