NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Carnival Corporation executives have extended condolences on the passing of West End and Bimini MP Obie Wilchcombe, describing him as, among other things, a “visionary leader” and a “tireless advocate for local tourism.”
Wilchcombe, the Member of Parliament for West End and Bimini Obie Wilchcombe was found unresponsive at his home on Grand Bahama on Monday. He was also a two-time Minister of Tourism.
“I know I speak not only for myself but for the entire Carnival Corporation & plc family in expressing our profound sadness on learning of the passing of long-serving Member of Parliament and former Minister of Tourism, Obie Wilchcombe. We join the Bahamian community in mourning the loss of this visionary leader, mentor, and friend,” Carnival Corp CEO and Chief Climate Officer Josh Weinstein said in a statement on his passing.
“We were privileged to have worked closely with Mr. Wilchcombe during both his tenures as Minister of Tourism, where his leadership, charisma, and passion for serving the people of The Bahamas were always evident,” he said.
Micky Arison, Chairman, Carnival Corporation & plc and the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, added that: “Obie Wilchcombe will be fondly remembered as a positive and constructive partner for the cruise industry in The Bahamas and a tireless advocate for local tourism in general. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of maximizing the impact of tourism for the benefit of the Bahamian people – especially those of his constituency of West End, Grand Bahama, and Bimini.”
