BTC suspends VSEP exercise

BTC CEO: VSEP “not our focus right”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has suspended its voluntary separation exercise (VSEP), its chief executive Garfield “Garry” Sinclair said yesterday.

Sinclair, who was speaking at a National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) press conference on Thursday, said, “We did initiate a VSEP process right before the hurricane which we have largely suspended.

“Our focus right now is humanitarian, getting our colleagues safe and back up and back to some sense of normalcy and then restoring network connectivity for all Bahamians. We have suspended that and we will take [that] up at some point in the future,4 but right now that is not the focus.”

Last month, Sinclair said the company had put a “compelling” voluntary separation offer on the table for staff wishing to exit the company. At the time, he said the company was hoping to have the exercise wrapped up by early September. The company has stated that the exercise is completely voluntary.
