Remediation efforts, including cleaning assets to continue for several months
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — “Major remediation” efforts undertaken since Bahamas Power and Light’s (BPL) fuel supply in April was contaminated, affecting 87,000 barrels of fuel, has safeguarded fuel needed for power generation, according to the power company.
In a statement, the power company said while the details of the contamination incident were still being investigated, the distributor, Sun Oil Limited, was working with BPL to remedy the situation.
The incident affected both BPL-owned units and those that were rented at the Blue Hills Power Station (BHPS) and Clifton Pier Power Station.
“In fact, immediately as they were informed of the breach, Sun Oil mobilized an action plan and has already restored clean fuel to rental unit at Blue Hills Power Station (BHPS),” read the statement.
“That remediation plan went into place on Monday, May 3, 2021.
“The immediate goal was to have the full 65MW of Aggreko rental units at BHPS available for dispatch by Thursday.
“Working together, the team was successful in meeting this goal.
“Initial concerns about availability of energy supply have been mitigated over the past few days.”
BPL CEO Whitney Heastie said: “It is important to note that while it will take some time, potentially two months or so, to clean all of BPL’s assets affected by the contamination, restoration of fuel supply for generation has already occurred.”
According to the power provider, the remediation efforts underway resulted in a “reliable supply of fuel” to BPL engines and rentals, “meaning that barring a catastrophe of some sort, energy supply is expected to remain at normal levels”.
