NASSAU, Bahamas — Bimini residents have repeatedly raised concerns about a drop in business linked to boating fees, according to Senator Randy Rolle, who says the impact is being felt across the island’s tourism-driven economy.
Rolle, who is vying for the Bimini and Berry Islands seat for the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) in the next general election, said the issue has been brought to him consistently by Bimini resident. “I want to take a moment to address an issue that has been brought to me repeatedly by the people of Bimini,” he said. “The recent burden on boaters has had a real impact on the local economy,” Senator Rolle said while making his contribution to the debate on the VAT amendments bill.
“We have seen the numbers drop, and Biminites have raised concerns,” Rolle added.
He emphasized that policy decisions must support communities that depend heavily on tourism. “If tourism drives Bimini’s economy, then our policies must support people who depend on it,” he said.
Rolle called on the government to continue reviewing its approach to the sector. “So today, I say clearly, I’m asking my brothers in government to let’s continue to examine the ways that we do to assist,” he said.
His comments come as the government reviews increased boating fees and related regulatory reforms introduced as part of broader budget measures in 2025. The changes raised costs for visiting vessels, including higher cruising permit fees, new anchorage fees and monthly fishing permit charges, sparking concern across the maritime sector.
Industry stakeholders, particularly in key boating destinations such as Bimini, Abaco and The Exumas, have reported a decline in visitor activity during the current winter boating season, with some describing it as significantly below prior years. The government has since indicated that the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport are engaged in ongoing consultations with the private sector to assess the competitiveness and impact of the new fee structure, with further updates expected.
