BahamasEMR+ passes key testing phase ahead of pilot launch

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Department of Public Health has announced the successful completion of User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for BahamasEMR+, a localized version of the OpenEMR electronic medical records system. This milestone paves the way for the system’s pilot rollout at the Gambier and Adelaide Clinics on February 3, 2025.

The testing process was conducted under the Information Systems for Health (IS4H) Bahamas initiative, a national effort by the Ministry of Health & Wellness to modernize healthcare technology. Key stakeholders—including healthcare administrators, doctors, nurses, and clerks—participated in rigorous evaluations to ensure the system meets local healthcare needs and workflows.

BahamasEMR+ is designed to streamline essential medical functions, including patient registration, appointment scheduling, and medical documentation. The system aims to improve efficiency, reduce administrative burdens, and enhance overall patient care across the public health sector.

Acting Director of Public Health Dr. Phillip Swann hailed the achievement as a critical step toward healthcare digitization.

“The successful UAT for BahamasEMR+ reflects our commitment to leveraging technology to modernize healthcare delivery. This achievement is a significant step forward as we prepare to roll out the pilot program, which will pave the way for the digitization of public primary healthcare services. Our goal is to create a national health information system that supports better health outcomes for all Bahamians.”

The pilot program at the Gambier and Adelaide Clinics will serve as a testing ground for the system’s real-world application before expanding to larger facilities. BahamasEMR+ is expected to lay the foundation for a unified health record system, creating a more connected and efficient public healthcare network.
