NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Stars organization is hosting a collegiate soccer showcase for local high school athletes this weekend at the Roscoe Davies Field.
A total of five colleges, including the University of The Bahamas (UB), will be represented at the single-day event. Along with the skills showcase on Saturday and Sunday, there will be an academic information session on Friday at the National Training Agency on Gladstone Road from 6-8 p.m.
The showcase is for students grades 9-12, and also open to athletes who graduated last year. The girls’ portion of the event is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, while the boy’s segment will be held from 3-9 p.m. on the same day.
Event organizer and Coordinator of Student-Athlete Resources and Support in the Ministry of Education, Jurelle Mullings, said the showcase is a great way to provide opportunities for student-athletes in the inter-scholastic soccer system.
“We have five colleges that will be coming down with the sole purpose of recruiting Bahamian student-athletes,” Mullings said. “They are coming with scholarships, so once the students show up with the skills and they have the academic requirements needed to get into the school, they will have an opportunity.”
Bahamas Football Association (BFA) General Secretary Carl Lynch said the local federation endorses the program and that it will provide as much assistance as possible.
“We fully support this event which gives our young footballers an opportunity to be seen by college coaches,” Lynch said. “With this opportunity, a few or most of them, hopefully, will prove themselves and are afforded the opportunity to further their education while playing at the collegiate level.”
