NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Bahamas’ healthcare sector will soon implement Information Systems for Health (IS4H) Bahamas, a digitalization initiative aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing administrative burdens, and improving patient care.
During a recent presentation led by IS4H Bahamas Senior Technica Project Manager David Strachan and Acting Director of Public Health Dr. Phillip Swann, Bahamas Nurses Union (BNU) President Muriel Lightbourne and some of her members were given an in-depth look at the IS4H Bahamas application universe.
The initiative will introduce a suite of integrated digital tools—including BahamasEMR+ (BEMR) and the Bahamas National Patient Portal (BNPP)—designed to streamline workflows and optimize service delivery.
Nurse Lightbourne and her team expressed strong support for the digitalization efforts, highlighting the anticipated benefits of reducing paperwork and administrative duties.
“This system will allow us to spend less time on forms and more time doing what we love—caring for our patients,” Lightbourne said.
A dynamic Q&A session addressed key concerns, including training requirements, pharmacy logistics, appointment scheduling, and payment options.
The IS4H Bahamas team clarified that all personnel who work directly with patients will receive training, and while digital payment options will be introduced, cash transactions will remain available. The team also assured attendees that inventory management and further system integrations are part of the long-term implementation plan.
With enthusiastic backing from the Bahamas Nurses Union, the digitalization initiative is set to revolutionize healthcare delivery, making processes more efficient and patient-centred.
