Acting director general makes first speech at Bahamas Hotel Tourism Association meeting

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Acting Director General Latia Duncombe made her first official address to a warm welcome during a Zoom meeting with Bahamas Hotel Tourism Association (BHTA) executives and stakeholders last week.

Duncombe talked about the ministry’s priorities, including new sustainable tourism initiatives and cultural experiences to support the country’s domestic tourism sector.

She said: “This is an extremely exciting time for me. Our sun, sand and sea are enduring characteristics that have undergirded our industry for more than 50 years. Now, our visitors want a different experience. They want to spend their time owning their vacation with engagement with people who share rich history, authenticity, all the things that make us who we are — Bahamians”.

Duncombe also used the opportunity to thank the association for its advice and input throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and for its support in helping to relaunch The Bahamas’ tourism recovery.

“We must join hands and linkages in this new and exciting decade,” she said.

“We must change and reform to ensure economic and social growth and I pledge my commitment to you and the Bahamian people.”

The BHTA holds meetings to recap, plan, update tourism officials about different ideas and bring awareness of challenges within the tourism sector.
