A Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) marine is now on probation after he was charged with stealing $2,000 from an Ecuadorian man who was being detained at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre (CRDC), awaiting his deportation.
Prosecutors said Barrecio Ferguson, 21, conducted a search of the immigrant and took his wallet and stole the money.
Ferguson was charged with one count of stealing and spent two nights detained at RBDF, as officials investigated the validity of the immigrant’s claims.
Ferguson pleaded guilty to Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux, who ordered him to 500 hours of community service to be split between Great Commission Ministries and Persis Rodgers Home for the Aged.
Ferguson must complete 250 hours at each, or face six months in the Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDOC).
Ferguson was represented by Attorney Calvin Seymour.
His case is adjourned until July 27.
