23rd Grand Bahama Business Outlook scheduled for March 17

Highlights will include panel discussions by GBPA leaders and past presidents of Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Scheduled for Thursday, March 17, 2022, the 23rd Grand Bahama Business Outlook (GBBO) will be delivered via Zoom primarily, with a few in-person events.

Leading the presentations will be two members of government, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper presenting the keynote address and Minister for Grand Bahama Ginger Moxey bringing introductory remarks.

In keeping with the Bahamas Business Outlook (BBO) theme for 2022, the focus will be on strategies to take The Bahamas’ northernmost island “Beyond Recovery Into Growth”.

Announcing highlights of the upcoming event, Joan Albury, president of TCL Group and founder of the BBO series, said: “We have scored a coup in this year’s GBBO panels.

“We are elated, for example, to welcome four members of the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA). Speaking to the topic ‘Revitalizing Grand Bahama’s Economy’ will be Philcher Grant, the port authority’s chief operating officer of public affairs and Grand Bahama Utility Company; Derek Newbold, chief investment officer; and Nakira Wilchcombe, vice president of building and development services.

“Samone Davis-Carey, the port authority’s communications specialist, will moderate this panel as well as the opening session of GBBO.

“Unprecedented too will be the gathering of four past presidents of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce. They are Kevin D Seymour, our moderator, who served from 2014 to 2016; Barry Malcolm, president from 2012 to 2014; Peter Turnquest, 2009 to 2011; and Michael Holdings, who led the organization from 2017 to 2019.”

Supporting the second largest segment of our country’s population and second only to New Providence in its contributions to the Bahamian economy, Grand Bahama is vital to the entire Bahamas.

Albury said this year’s forum will cover industry, including maritime and chemical, banking and finance, education and healthcare.

“We have chosen as presenters representatives of companies and other entities that contribute significantly in terms of employment, contributions to the public purse and ability to attract high-ticket investment,” she said.

“They are all experts in their fields, highly experienced and noted for their professional acumen.”

Topics and speakers include “The DHHS Northern Bahamas Healthcare Initiative” by Dennis Deveaux, chief financial officer, Doctors Hospital Health System (DHHS); and representing the Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM) are Peter Goetz, founder and CEO, and Dr Paula Wales, executive dean and chief academic officer. Following will be “The Discover App” by Gravette Brown, chief commercial officer, Aliv.

A panel discussing “Growing the Industrial Sector: Removing Barriers, Restoring Incentives, Refurbishing Infrastructure” will feature Kevin Seymour, chief financial officer, PharmaChem Technologies GB Ltd (moderator); Randy Thompson, CEO, PharmaChem Technologies GB Ltd; and David Skentelbery, CEO, Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd.

Gowon Bowe, CEO, Fidelity Bank Bahamas Limited, will speak to “Financial Health” and Dr Ian Strachan, president, University of The Bahamas-North, will discuss “Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship”.

“The Right Time to Invest in Grand Bahama” will be presented by Robert Pantry, founder & CEO, Simplified Lending. and Alan Bassett, chairman and CEO, the Bahamas Distilling Company.

Participating in the opening activities of GBBO will be Reverend Marie Roach-Hepburn, assistant curate, pro-Cathedral, Christ The King Anglican Church, giving the prayer and the Grand Bahama Youth Choir Programme will present the national anthem under the direction of Kevin G Tomlinson.

Along with the New Providence and the Grand Bahama forums, the Bahamas Business Outlook series now covers Abaco, Andros, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Exuma and Long Island.
